Can the Mondeo gearbox not go on for any particular reason? If it's a space reason, what space?

I was just thinking about a 6 speed possibility, shorter ratios to bring the top down but have a better top cruising gear for long journeys, resulting in better fuel usage.

So there's nothing getting in the way physically, just mounting it, and shortening the shaft(s) to accomodate the extra width then.

The big one to watch out for that I missed is the Crank Angle Sensor which is fixed to an alloy housing which is bolted to the rear of the block. Because I used a Mondeo Automatic the sensor is fixed at a larger diameter than the sensor holes in the 1.6 flywheel I used. I didn?t realise this until I came to start the engine and had no spark or fuel. The solution was to change this alloy housing to correctly re-position the sensor. The bad news was that I had to remove the gearbox again to change this!!!!!

Crank Angle Sensor Mounting Block?Beware!!!

Does anybody have any more info on this??? I dont fully understand it :( Thanks guys

the crank sensor has to line up with the trigger slots on the back of the flywheel, so if u have a automatic sensor housing with a 1.6 flywheel from a manual, then the sensor wont pick up a signal, therefor no spark, best thing to do is to keep the sensor housing matched to the flywheel that came from the same car if you can

With the mondeo box also, most of them have a hydraulic clutch slave cylinder inside the box, if you were to go through with it and fit a mondy box then you would need to custom make a pedal box with an inbuilt clutch master cylinder, plus a clutch/brake fluid feed from the brake fluid resivior snd all other connecting lines, alot of work when there are much better gearboxes to use with much less hassle of fitting them

Still tempting to do it, lol. I'm up for ripping the stuff out of a mondeo and a scrapped fiesta, comparing, sizing up etc. I've got the entire braking system off a mondeo on my car, why not do the gearbox as well as the engine? :P

good on you if you do it, but the ratios are quite lazy tbh, st170 6speed box would be a much better choice
