I've been through about 6 of the newer style (flat bottomed) coil packs on my 2001 Mk5 Fiesta. Shortest lived was a brand new Lucas one which cost about £60 and lasted two weeks.
Changed it over to the older style coil pack (clip on leads) - second hand one of unknown age - and it's still going fine. Never seen one of this type fail, on any of the 4 cars I have had them on.
The older coil packs seem to be easier to get hold of in a scrap yard, where the newer ones have generally already been taken - does this tell us something about their reliability?
So in my opinion, definitely use the silver top one. Black top ones are too unreliable, and too expensive to replace.
