i currently own a 1.4 si, my very first car at the tender age of 18, and im eager to get this badboy up and running with plenty of mods.
il just write a list of what i want to do:
1.conversion to mondeo 2.0l
2.sports exhaust system
3.whole re-spray of the car (my auntie, the previous owner left it under a tree in london a lot of the time, sap has destroyed the varnish on the roof and bonnet)
4.racing fox alloys at 15"
5.gaz coilys
6.front splitter and possible arch modification
7.central locking system (had big trouble with my so called 'mates' who also have fords, they are able to get into my car with their keys!)
8.what could i get for my 1.4 that has around 35,000 miles on the clock?
9.finally, at the moment, my engine makes a flicking noise at the peak of 3000rpm, been told it's the cam belt possibly flicking against the casing... any suggestions?

hope this list isn't a pisstake (too long) but i would love help and advice and i know this is the place to go! thanks, ben

What you want to do will cost a lot of money and time. I don't want to put you off the idea, ive been working on mine for over a year, doing a very similar list plus a bit more, bit by bit, its not easy. You say your a bit of an amatuer when it comes to mechanics, if you paying someone to do these bits its going to cost even more.

As for your cambelt, take off the cover and take a look, post a picture and we'l have a look. Check for general loosness etc. I had a slapping noise once on a zetec and turned out to be the cambelt slapping around. If your not sure, take it too a garage and get the, to have a look. If it snaps could cause a lot of trouble.

cookie, i know this is a very late reply but in regards to the flicking noise, i asked my mechanic a while back and he said he wouldnt be able to diagnose it without stripping the engine. my car will be officially off the road tomorrow and in a safe and warm garage, so i will take off the cover and take some pictures sometime in the next couple of weeks. would appreciate your advice :D

you wont need to paint the wholew car..the bonnet and roof can be flatted and relaqured without the need for painting the whole car..that really is a mammoth task...best results mean it needs to be gutted of everything.
Engine wise. id leave the CVH in there till it shits its pants and dies to be honest...light tapping may be a sticky tappet..flush and oil change shuts them up 9 times out of 10. try taking the alt belt off and running it. dont run it for long. it may be a belt idler or something that trivial. but take the aux belt off and try it first. just to eliminate anything on that side of it.
Coilovers..beware...there are plenty of used MK3 sets out there..3.5 ones are a bit harder to find...unless you buy new..cha ching!
Central locking...find an electrics pack from a fiesta and put that in ;)

rest is pretty run of the mill stuff to be honest. thats the main bits covered :)

ahh thanks jam :D some top advice there. yeh i think i am going to wait till my engine snuffs it. and when it will be cheaper with insurance.
in regards to the paint, i originally was thinking just to do the roof and bonnet, however there are a few dodgy spots around the car. i will eventually get on down to a body shop to get a couple of quotes of cause.

whats a tappet? and everything you have said there, does it tell you how to do it in the haynes? and is the alt belt the cambelt?

haha! yes i have heard they are expensive. might just be a cheapskate chav and chop em! ;)
i also the the eletrics pack is going to be a bitch, but im willing to give it a go :D

thanks again man

the alt/aux belt drives the power steering and alternator. the cam belt is behind the big grey cover...flush..do what it says on the tin...oil change as per haynes
tappet or follower transmits the profile of the cam to act on the valve..it follows the cam lobe and pushes the valves up and down

DO NOT CHOP SPRINGS....wait your time and find a 35mm drop kit ;)

shorter springs have higher poundage rates.. and are setup to be shorter..chopping them ruins them and youll end up doing alot more damage than you think as they will be short..but soft..and it will ride like shit. a 2p will feel like a manhole cover!!
