currently the 1.1 is off road for a bit of a tidy up (well, 2l and new spray job), just wondering if i'll need a cat on the exhaust, as it is now it doesnt have 1 (h-reg 1990), but if im putting a 2l into it will it need 1?

i cant remember if its the year of the car or the year of the engine that dictates this :s

You need a cat for your car unless you can prove that the engine is older than 1992, unfortunately all zetecs were made after 1993 so you have to have a cat. The age of the car you are putting the engine in makes no difference unfortunately.

i thought u didnt have to have one b4 95? As a mate has a mreg si and hes never needed a cat for his mot's but i need 1 as mines a 96 n reg

Its done from the car, not the engine, so you can put a 2000 engine in a 1990 car and not need a cat, but if you put a 1990 engine in a 2000 car you will need a cat, thats why if you put an rs engine into an si you have to put a cat on it.

i thought it was required to have a cat on cars after 93. i would have thought it was done by the engine due to emissions. coz they will test the car on the emissons for a 2l zetec not a 1.1. so id say you deff need a cat. coz the car isent the thing polluting etc its what the engine is chucking out the exhaust.

As mike2530 said its the engine they go by.

A few years back we put an uno turbo lump in a cinq and needed the engine number on the logbook to prove the car didnt need a cat come mot time.
