How's this for a plan to modify the zetec 1.6?

Add brake light switches to the throttle and clutch pedals, hook into these and the handbrake light switch, along with a switch to detect neutral being selected.

With all of these conditions, pedals up, handbrake on and in neutral, after bein warm enough, engine stops automatically, then when you clutch down to go for first gear it starts up.

Possible issues: engaging the starter too long, not getting the engine properly warmed up before doing it, accounting for pedal switch slip and pedal 'play'.

Feel free to throw any ideas forward!

Waste of time and money.

You will use more fuel starting up the car again than what you would sitting idle.

If you wanted to turn the engine off while sitting in traffic or something then just turn it off :)

Yes iv always found turning the key a challenging task lol.
Seriously though iv always thought this feature is a waste of time on new cars let alone sticking it on an old car for the reasons danny mentioned, starting a car uses more fuel and repeatedly using the starter motor will do it no good.

Generally, the ammount of fuel used for startup will be less than approx 2 mins idling. The manufacturers claim at least 8% saving for stop start.
So switch off if you think you wont move for about 2/3 mins+ . Also, lots of idling can cause bore glazing, especially on diesels. We see a lot of this on boats where big diesels are running at very low revs for long periods. Stop/start on a boat= not a good idea!!

I heard this on a bmw today... when I heard the engine stop, I looked and instantly thought 'what are you doing?' then they went to pull away and it started again. If that was installed on my car, I would pull the fuse out for it.

Believe it or not this idea has been floating around since the late 20s early 30s. cars back then would have a propensity to cut out when idling on a regular basis. Lucas had a system called Startix i think it was called. which would automatically start the engine should it cut out, which was employed by the rover car company, there may have been other companies using it but im not 100% on that. however many owners found it irritating rather than an aid and it was deleted from the options list, and many owners simply disabled it. obviously this system would have been switches and relays rather than the ECU controlled systems of today. and its not quite the same as stop/start but its reasonably relevant. For reducing pollution in cities it is a good idea imo.....but trying to make at the youngest a 17 year old ford behave like a modern car i think is a bit pointless.
