now before i start i would like you guys to note that im fully aware that id get more power by changing for a bigger engine but thats no something im really interested in doing

anyway

seein as the choice engine in the si was the 1.6l zetec e i thought guys would be the best to ask! can someone please point me in the direction of some performance parts for the smaller zetec engine. at the moment ive just got a 4-2-1 tubular manifold, decat and cat back exhaust which has made a notable difference. i didnt bother with indction kits and the like, all noise and i cant see sucking up hot air from the engine bay giving me anymore power

my goal would be to try and push the 1.6 to perhaps 105/110hp? (please say if thats not possible so i can stop before i begin lol) i wouldve thought a 15hp gain would be pretty achievable but to be honest, this is the most modern thing ive ever worked on if you believe it or not. my normal tinkering is done with crossflows and 1st line cvhs lol

cheers
scott

Short of a set of off the shelf kent cams, i'm not really sure what else you could do!

Nowadays there aren't really many aftermarket parts like that available for the 1.6 tbh.

Someone may correct me if i'm wrong

kent cams eh? never used em as i said im a little old school so its always been burton power for me lol but they dont do anything for the smaller variant zetec.

iv read the ports on the 1.6 are eye wateringly pathetic so i wonder if i could enlarge them any? (looking for confirmation on that one lol)

iridium plugs n magnacor leads are looking like my next purchase at the moment, shouldn't set me back too much

If money is no object the turbo it, youll see about140/150
If not then cams and might aswel get a decent airfilter, if your worried about heat soak then get a cold air feed un there, maybe fabricate an air box or just get a k&n panel filter with original airbox.
There alsosome superchips floating around, whether any gains are pissible out of them is unknown but its not really notable ftom what iv heard.

Don't think plugs and leads will give you anything, I've had a superchip and it did naff all.

Its a tough question!

Very much doubt you would see 110bhp unless you spent serious money.

The 1.6's dont respond well to mods, they are very restrictive.

If you do want to chuck away some money then get yourself a HO/RS1800 inlet and throttle body, might as well get a bigger maf while you are there from a 2.0 perhaps, lose the standard induction setup, get something less restrictive, then cam the engine. All that with the mods you have got may see you 110bhp, but it will also give you a load more torque too.

Piper cams sell zetec-e camshaft kits, but the money you spend on a kit you could get a 2.0 engine and have 130bhp+/- with a shit load of torque as standard. I know you say you dont want to do that, but it would make more sense than throwing money away on a 1.6

and i dont think insurance is as bad as youd think if thats holding you back because they will insure you off what the engine is out of which is a mondeo. Itll have slightly more power and torque than an rs1800 but be cheaper to insure.

Surely it would be cheaper for you to insure the escort with a standard 2litre zetec than it would be to insure a 1.6 with modifications, would be cheaper to gain power for definate with a 2litre or 1.8litre

I always thought the si's had 1.8s

Try Need2insure, they work miracles.

How old are you? If your under 25 youll get bummed no matter what, its just a case of by how much lol.
Have a play around with it like trying insurance with the 2.0 in.

My st170 rapes me but meh.

lol lou, sometimes rape feels good

really mate unless its a turbo dont bother with the 1.6 zetec e

4-2-1 and better inlet systems will help it breath but without tons of dosh you aint seing past 100bhp with it

there used to be a turbo kit for them back in the 90s using a small T2 turbo and they made 140 with 160lbs of torque, which kicks the CVH turbos head in

but for that money a turbo'd 1.8/2.0 be past 200bhp...

try dropping in the Xr3i 130 spec 1.8, but tell the insurance its a standard 1.8 from an Si or LX (gti if you must) sly i know but theres no way in hell the insurance can know the difference

yeh i see what u guys are saying, ill give it a go n see what happens, to be honest would anyone even be able to tell the difference if i changed to a larger zetec e, they look identical (not that im trying to scam insurance companies its just a question)

and yeh they did a baby si, although they are quite rare because to be honest who on earth would buy a 1600, when u could buy an 1800? much like the fiesta si, who wants the 1400? no one. but then again saying that people bought escorts fitted with a hcs engine...thats effing suicide and i like the hcs engine

if you want to make the most of your aftermarket exhaust, get yourself a dremel and open out the exhaust ports on the head as there tiny on the 1.6 and very restrictive, bore them out to match your manifold,

Image

as you can see its quiet small compaired to the manifold

Image

also you can get a ho manifold and sandwich plate, and 2 liter throttle body and get a good cold airfeed.

thats pritty much all you can do to make it breath easier but if you want more power your better off changing the engine for a 1.8 or 2.0 as there quiet cheap and an easy swap, hope that helps mate ;)
