I bought a Bolt-In 6point cage second hand off ebay but the fitting kit is like £100! Seeing as I only paid £150 for the cage it seems a shame to have to pay silly money to fit it!!! Does anybody have any photos of the fitting kit because I am going to make one myself and having an idea of what the originals look like would give me a nice head start!

Hi think mine was a ebay Safety Devices one too, dont know what the fitting kit would be though unless its just a bag of bolts and possibly 6 pieces of the correct 3mm thick mounting plates for the MSA standard, is you have a look through my thread below micht be some relevant pictures to help.

Thanks Will! Your cage looks different to mine where it bolts in so I dont know if yours has been modified or if it just an earlier/later version of mine and they have changed it?! I can see by the shape of the plates welded to my cage where it bolts through the rear inner arches, where it has to be positioned so I think I will start here and see where the rest ends up and decide what to do! Also, I have offered my cage up and I dont know whether I didnt have the rear section far enough back but it seems like the bars that follow the door frames seem to foul the dash and I thought that I may have to cut some sections out of the dash but like I say, maybe im just being a knob jockey!!!

Some are longer and do go through the dash better to have a dry fit to see where where the feet line up, its generaly home practice to weld in plates to bolt it to to add strength

Yea dry fit is deffo my first step! I have read through your members gallery post and I think you have done a good job with your car and it has given me some good ideas for mine!!!

One other question is did you ever have any problems with your hubs/bearings? Do you really think its worth changing to mondeo items?? I thought I would look into this early as I have Mk3 Coilovers and I am told that the Mk3.5 hubs have a bigger hole where the strut goes so I could in theory just do it once and try and fit mondeo items!!!

Never had a problem with hub bearings as think the si has bigger bearings if you do a search on here its said you can fit tthe smaller coilovers in the si hubs will use of a 0.6mm shim. Are you doing a road or track car?

I am doing an out and out track car with some racing in mind in the future! Does a company make the shim or are people just simply using 0.6mm strip of metal and folding it round the strut?

Bigger bearings in the 3.5 sounds good! I will look into both options as my plan is to buy a mk1 2.0 mondeo which will hopefully have the right ECU, engine and ancilliaries, servo and front brakes so if there is not too much involved in swapping the hubs over and that its not going to ruin the suspension geometryhen it will save me the job of making the brakes fit the fiesta hub (not that there is that much involved but if I have a complete car to rob bits off anyway then there's nothing to loose!)

What brakes are you running on yours and how do they perform?

So Sierra cosworth front discs and calipers with standard si rears? And did you bother with a ZS rear beam?

another good reading link is DALSY's thread for an out and out track car.

as for brake setup im running 4x4 Escort cosworth discs and calipers, think the 2wd serria ones wont fit as different spacing, generally ok under most 15" rims and standard rear Si drums, other options are ST150 & ST 170 disc's but think the 300mm option may require 16" rims.
Apart from issue with servo/master cylinder standard rear drums get hot but with dot 5 fluid seem to work ok even when running slicks, its possible to fit rear discs but ive never felt need.

Ok, that's cool! Well thanks for this info! Like I said, I'm hopefully going to find a mk1 2.0 mondeo to buy so I can squire all the relevant bit! Do you know the
dirrence between 4x4 cossie and mondeo front brakes? So the 4x4 ones require any modification to fit?

Also have you had any problems with front wishbones?

Well I am undecided as to how low to go but I will see! I have corner weight scales at work so I plan on setting it up properly from day 1! Who make the adjustable wishbones?

Also, what gearbox are you running and are you using a LSD?

area six do them but not cheap, is an option if required to modify some standard ones


im running standard Si gearbox, which is quite short ratios with first on a 2litre being little use, but still ok for 132mph at around 7200rpm, ratios depend on track and in wet definatly spins up the inside wheel, best option seems series 2 RS turbo gearbox with standard LSD

Ok cool!!! Well I am going to look into the costs of making my own wishbones, ie modified standard ones (like area 6) or maybe even tubular design with rod ends! (Im sure I had seen someone before that had some like that!)

Do you know what gearboxes the S2 LSD will fit? Im sure the ratios on the Si box will be fine to start with but as you increase power with engine mods and actually get more confident with the car and improve your driving skills, maybe the gearing will be too short! Its definately where I am going to start as it is the box I have :D and seems sweet as a nut!

Once again thanks for your help Will! When are you planning your next trackday? I was booked in for the 18th of this month on the silverstone National circuit but due to weather it got cancelled! (what idiot books a trackday this time of year anyway!!!) We were planning on just doing a trackday with the standard car and then do the build over the cold months ready for some serious action next year!!! Maybe I will see you around sometime! :thumbsup:

info regarding fitting a LSD here, think fitting the RS series 2 gearbox complete is easiest way to go though


new trackday is booked for 20th Feb on the new 3 mile snetterton circuit long as they finished building it by then
