Hi everyone, im a real big si enthusiast- i have 3 of them now and have just acquired this really nice XR2I 1.8. the car is mint and i rescued it from being scrapped. it all works fine and is a high spec model but the engine is a bit missy and seems very tired :(

Thing is, ive got a brand new never run before blacktop 1.8 engine left over from another project, on first glance it looks vaugely as if it will fit. i haven't really measured anything yet as i thought i would seek advice first. i have done engine conversions in the past so i know how much of a headache they can be.

so does anyone know for definate if they fit or not and how much work it involves? or am i wasting my time? i would rather do something different than the usual 2.0l conversion?????

Yes they can be made to fit. But modifications are needed. I cant remember off the top of my head, but this question has come up before so have a search around on here and FT fella.

It will fit, im doing it on my si. You need to weld up a custom mount.

Bit of bodging and it will go lol

Thanks for all the feedback guys im going to have a crack at it an see what happens, there are just a few things bothering me before i start tho.

The first being, are there going to be clearance issues between the chassis leg and the front pulleys on the engine an stuff???

and another concern is how to run the auxiliary drive belt, as the XR2I does not have power steering and the waterpump is also driven from this belt and not the cambelt as on the greytop engine???

And last but not least is it really worth doing? i mean i know that the lifters are different in the black-top but is there any other difference apart from this physically and in performance???

if you want simplicity, get a silvertop 2.0 mondeo engine and a complete 1.8/1.6 fiesta zetec engine.

use the 2.0 with fiesta waterpump, sump, flywheel, clutch, and manifolds and mountings and it will bolt straight together and bolt in place of existing mounts without having to touch anything.

You can use the power steering/alternator mount without the p/s pump, just have to be creative with belts etc.

- no clearnance issues with black or silvertop

- is it worth doing? Yes and no. Im doing mine as a blacktop as its been stripped to a bare shell and redone, so want a decent engine with low milage. Decent Silvertop 2.0s arent the esaiest of things to get hold of....

Otherwise id just stick a silvertop in for ease of doing. Probably not much real performance difference.

To sum up. Silvertop, straight forward and easy. Cheap (i did mine for 100 quid inc engine!), hard to find decent engine.
Blacktop, lots more work for a slightly better engine, can be more expensive, easier to find decent engine.

If i was going to do blacktop it would have to be one i was going to further mod, eg. blacktop focus rs setup or throttle bodies, otherwise a silvertop will do fine, rebuild a cheap silvertop if you want it perfect 8-)
