Going off my own personal experience insurance aint gonna be cheap for you at first, first quotes I got where £3500 so I had to wait awhile. Hopefully someone will have better advice but mine would be drive a 1 litre whatever for a year while you work on the si then get quotes for the si when it comes to renewal and see if its cheaper. |

There is so many factors insurance companies take into consideration, as loumiester says it can be a struggle at first and being 17 will probably go against you. As it is I did get a 1.1 fiesta for the first year which really helped, another thing which is worth looking up is doing the pass plus course. |

I'm 20 and still pay £300 a month for my si. I think its the area i live in though bcoz any car i put in is a sky high premium. Have you thought about running round in a crummy 1 litre for a couple years to build up ur no claims and garage the si and maybe wrk on it in the garage for a while?? Boring idea i knw but it saves money. |

Well a decent Si is getting harder to find these days so if yours is decent I would keep hold of it (if you can store it). Get quotes for a few runabouts, it doesn't have to be a fiesta any cheap 1.0/1.1/1.2 will do but insurance can be massively different so it might be worth getting quotes and buying a car based on the quotes. |

I wouldn't bother earning a years no claims and hoping to get insurance on a decent 2.0 a year later, would still be atrotious. I was paying £160 a month for my 1.6 Si. might have had a year NCB then. best thing to do is ring around companies and try and haggle, or get a 1.0 or something, but even then they'll charge you a fortune on that as well. So you might want to pay the extra for the 1.6 Also Pass plus is starting to become quite rubbish I hear.. people saying about how there paying more to do the course than its saving, or its saving them nothing at all ![]() |

Thats a shame with pass plus, it actually saved me money back in the day. I will add it also made me a better driver. As I say age will be your biggest problem so it might be a case of sitting it out until you are 19/20. |

When I my partner passed I did looked into alot if quotes with and without pass plus and there was barely a difference so in her case there was no point in doing it. I did it myself but it was paid for by my work. If your serious about your si then keep it and just get cheap arse runaround but as said get quotes before you buy because just because it has a small engine doesnt mean its cheap. The insurance for me is cheaper on my 1.6 si than the 1.2 corsa she has but its the other way round for her, all the factors insurance companies go off dont add up so make sure you shop around. |
