well il start with the reason why i had the chance to go racing
my dad race's a mazda mx5 in the max5 racing series for the keystone computer group team and they have 4 car's alltogether 3 which they use themself's and 1 they hire out
well 2 week's ago my dad was speaking to the boss of the team about how i wanted to get into racing and he said if i got my MSA compition licence i could take the hire car out at the next round at oulton park
so i rang round my local tracks to see if i could get my licence done in time well donnington dont do it anymore, mallory park and siverstone both couldnt get it done in time i finnaly found a track that could fit me in but it was in anglesey in north wales which is 4 hour's away from me but i went anyway and passed 100%
and got this
so now i was one step closer to racing but now i had to sort a helmet,glove's and some boot's i wouldnt need overall's as i would be borrowing some in the team colour's anyway £400 later i had theese
i was know allset to go but as ive never drivin a rear wheel drive car before and dident really know oulton park that well, we thought it would be a good idea if i did a track day before i raced so we booked a trackday the week before i would race the only trouble was the bloke who drives the transporter which takes the hire car to the track was at work so i would have to drive the truck which is a 6 wheel 3.5 tonne beast
i was a bit worried about driving the truck as its about 4x bigger than a fiesta lol but i managed ok and it was quite easy to drive once i had done a few mile's
we finnaly got to the track and by know i was rather excited we started the day with a drivers breifing where they told us it would be an open pitlane allday which i was happy about as it ment we would get more time on the track
the boss johnathan took me out in his car first to show me what the cars could do it was unreal i couldnt beleve how well the car car handled and how fast we were going into the corners
then he sat in with me and told me what lines to take and which gear's i should be using
we then had a break to cool down
then i went out on my own and my best lap was a 2.30 which wasnt to bad for my first time in the car but by the end of the day i had got my time down to 2.15 which was only 2 seconds behind the rest of the team who all know the car's and track well so i was happy with that
by now i was knackerd you just dont realise how much there is to consentrate on while you on track eg the car ,the corner's, the flag's faster cars flying up behind you its unreal how much energy it takes and i still had to drive the truck back yet
a week later race day i was up bright and early for 7am we then signed on at 8am and then at 8.30am we headed down to scrutineering passed that ok and headed back to prep the car ready for qualifing 9.40am iwe headed out to qualify i did ok apart from going on the grass once oop's lol
then we had to weait till 2pm to race this was the longest part of the day it seemed to take for ever to come
but when it did i was rather nervous anyway the race went ok i finished 28th out of 30 which was ok for my first time out the car's are so closely matched perfomance wise its very hard to make up any time once you made even the slightist mistake which i found out
any way here's some pic's and if any of you ever get the chance to have ago it's well worth it i want to race more than ever now ive just got to sort my fund's out
also while i was at the track i spotted 12 escort cosworth's all just sitting there wanting to be driven by me lol
Looks ace dude. Where did you finish overall? Do a Donny round so I can come watch. I was up near Wigan/Warrington and spotted some MX5s on trailers on the M6 further south, I guessed they were from your race or something.
