Chaps... ma's astra failed big time on the MOT so she's bought a gold 'collection' ka, 78,000 miles on the clock, 12 months t&t.... £650! ill get a thread going on members gallery because im going to turn it into a looker (she won't mind)... errrr so i came back from work to see it and noticed it had an oil leak straight away! obviously the bloke didnt change the washer on the sump plug so im doing it tomorrow. what oil does it take? same as a fez? oh and i think ill be getting insured on it for banter. peace |

What makes you say it's just the washer on the sump plug mate? Have you had a look and seen it leaking from there? Because it may well be leaking somewhere else. |

Yeah, go for 10-40 ![]() Fair enough with the leak, just making sure. The last I remember of your mechanical skills, they were, shall we say - slightly inexperienced ![]() |

Don't pimp out your mums car, spend the money on getting the si sorted lol. Hope you get the leak sorted, should be easy if it's just the plug. |

ha true louis, very true ![]() hmm i didnt danny no! stupid me. in the process of doing it now. seen a few things that concern me... there was water leaking out of the exhaust (where the middle section connects to the backbox)... and a split all the way through the middle of the fan belt (which im guessing is what it is). any suggestions on whether they are serious issues? |

Post subject: | Re: Ma's Ka |
If a belt is split, get it changed! Although, it's not going to be a fan belt, most cars don't have fan belts. They're auxiliary belts, and can be linked to things like the water pump, alternator, oil pump, air con pump etc etc. So if it snaps, you can do some damage. Water dripping from your exhaust will just be the condensation that's built up in the exhaust and finding it's way out from a leak more than likely. |

With regards to the exhaust, if the car has been used as a shop run car where the engine and exhaust dont really get upto temps, water/condensation will build up like Des stated, and thats what causes the exhaust to rot from the inside out. All the cars you see with water pissing out the exhaust generally driven by old people are the worst for it. It's not much to worry about, just get the engine and exhaust nice and hot for the next week or 2 and it will clear it up no problem. Also, driving it hard making the exhaust gasses flow through the system faster helps too. |

I have oil around my sump plug. Which is coming all the way up from my rocker cover gasket. Oil travels, so make sure it is the sump plug. |

yeah double checked, was defo that! about to fill it up now. thanks for the exhaust, tbf it was an old couple who owned it before us haha! in regards to the belt, how hard is it to change it? |

Post subject: | Re: Ma's Ka |
Not hard. Depends on how accessible it is as to how hard it is. But it's just a case of slackening it off (however that may be done - mine has adjusters by the alternator for one belt, which moves the alternator to allow removal and refit, and by the power steering pump for the other belt), removing the belt, putting new one on, and tightening it back up to what it needs to be ![]() |
