Read: http://uk.cars.yahoo.com/25072011/36/fo ... ers-0.html Discuss. Is this the way all car manufacturers will go? Do you think it's a good move? How does this compare to being forced to switch to DAB in the future? Personally, I like my CD's. When I buy music (or anything for that matter), I like to have a physical object in exchange for my hard earned. I've never been a fan of buying music online for this very reason. Single's, yes, I could do, but albums? Nah, I want something to hold, artwork, little booklets. But then, maybe I'm old fashioned in that sense? But if you think it's the way forward, to go digital, then you can't object to the whole DAB thing surely? You will say CD's to digital is the way forward, well surely analogue to digital is the way forward? Are we now edging ever closer to an entire "cloud" based lifestyle? I personally hate the term "cloud", it sounds so uber gay - but I also do not trust it so much. But there again, the benefits of having access to anything and everything, anywhere and everywhere you are, are great! Is it secure though? Sony's PSN was secure. Right up until the point that it got hacked. What do you lot think of Fords move towards getting rid of CD's then? ![]() |

Bad move getting rid I personally think too, it will slump sales of ford cars in the long run. Not everyone has access to a computer to put music onto a stick or ipod ect. CD's are still the way forward imo. Our lifestyle in the day and age is a joke... Ok, im only 21 and perhaps I havent seen and lived it all, but seriously, how many kids do you see running around, climbing trees, having fun ect? Hardly any. Family days out? Once a year perhaps these days. Picnics? Do they even exist anymore? Its amazing how technology has made us have a poor lifestyle in many ways. |

I agree with you, but I don't think it will impact on their sales so much. As the article says, CD sales have slumped 35% in the last few years - that's a massive drop! Although it does then say at the end of the article that CD players are still being offered, just being phased out. I completely agree about kids too. It's daft. But the way things are on the streets lately, I wouldn't want my kids out and about with the state of things, and less police. Technology has just given them a reason to stay in though, and it will be having an effect on health and growth ![]() |

Didnt read the artical but I can see this happening more. As long as they are still being offered then people can choose what they are happy with. DAB radio is a good move, and connectivity for external mp3 players is good. I currently run a headunit with a 160gb ipod inside it, dont miss cd's one bit lol |

I currently run a very expensive head unit, with some massive features. DAB is not one of them. I do not wish to buy another headunit to listen to the radio! My headunit reads WMA and MP3's, so I can drag and drop files onto a CD and it reads them. The last one I made had about 18 full albums and a folder or single songs. No need for an MP3 player. In fact, I don't actually own an MP3 player! ![]() But this article just shows the way the world is going. Everything in digital format. Nothing to hold. It'll all be like Demolition Man soon enough with the 3 seashells ![]() |

![]() My last headunit used did the same, able to read data discs and I loved it, till it shat its pants and died. I was getting sick of scratching discs too, so found a headunit and ipod cheap, does the job ![]() |

I was looking at this for my new ride: http://www.sony.co.uk/product/mfi-ipod- ... sx-s300btx and I am considering buying it, look at the pictures to see how it works. I still buy all my music on cd, just because I want a nice collection and physical medium with artwork etc. I buy them, take them home and rip them to my pc, ipod and ps3. The cd then lives on the shelf. Never to be played again. |

I simply have a USB stick where I keep my songs which plugs into my head unit. It wouldn't bother me too much. But then on the other hand, I hope CD's are never phased out. I know we're advancing as a race, and maybe CD's are unnecessary regarding certain peoples perspectives from the more advanced Flash memory being used and the environmental angle, but I agree that I feels good to have a CD collection, just like a games collection, just like a book collection, etc |

i think its stupid think of it this way, if your mother/father or other older member of family went to buy a brand new ford and he said it doesnt have a cd player but DAB and usb etc i know my mother would walk away for the simple fact she doesnt really know what it all is. For the younger generation then yes it could be a hit but its a risky move by ford. |

I think they should leave it a bit longer, like the tape - cd switch, fords ditched tape players like 5 years after shops stopped selling casettes, however everywhere still sells cds, so it's too soon! |

Funny enough, I agree with everything that's been said ![]() I thought it interesting to see what you lot thought though, because I really am NOT one of the MP3 only generation. I've never bought a song online. I don't own an MP3 player. And I don't want to go down the route of removing a physical object you pay for. I remember when MP3's first came out, this uber way of compressing sound data so it doesn't take up loads of space on your MEGA sized 1.2Gb hard drive! It allowed you to get more songs on your CD's. That was that. Now it's being used to take away something I and many others have grown up with! The question is, will any other car manufacturers follow Ford, and will that then lead onto more medium ditching CD's. As you say it's too soon, but that's only at the moment. If everyone does what Ford have done, it's easy for the CD to die THANKS to this move... |

ugh i basicly do the same as this "I still buy all my music on cd, just because I want a nice collection and physical medium with artwork etc. I buy them, take them home and rip them to my pc, ipod and ps3. The cd then lives on the shelf. Never to be played again." i like having cd's pan up my wall on a shelf, i use them in my car when i cba to fiddle around with a ipod or my phone, and lets face it, my stereo isnt ipod optimised so i gotta select the sing using my ipod itself, and im sure thats as illegal as using a phone while driving as for downloads, again ill be honest ive never had a "paid" for download in my life, i dont even have an account with itunes, i cant even be arsed if ford ditch the cd players im sure it will be a highly controversial move, and me like most wont be taken to it and may drive new buyers away because even though they say its an option, im sure they will make it so much harder to get one fitted to your car even before its left the showroom, as it will be a made to fit order other than picking a "focus" with a cd player already fitted... the only people i can imagine wanting to do away with cd's is the younger generation coming up, who cant even drive yet as theyre all about 12-16, they dont buy cd's as they'd rather spend theyre pocket money on other stuff, yet mammy bought them an ipod for xmas Danny, come on who apart from our gran parents doesnt own a Pc? even if its not internet enabled |

I never keep the standard head unit anyway so no differnce, I guess this will lead to mire sales of aftermarket headunits. |

Yeah i never use my cd player, but it's a source that's there, and doesn't get in the way, so i don't see why they can't keep cd players and just add stuff like usb, aux, ipod, bluetooth and whatnot |
