got quite a big payday today from 2 weeks work and i've been taxed. i'm a full time student so i shouldn't be taxed and haven't been since i've been in college! so if someone could give me a contact number so i can ring up and ask that would be great. thanks ben |

647 should be the amount you earn before paying any tax oh and thats over a yr not a week lol but not sure with students thou look on tax website? |

You are wrong that you shouldn't be taxed, the tax code means you can earn £6470 a year before paying tax to which I guess you are doing part time bits and pieces so potentially won't go over that. Now the W1 means its on a week 1 basis as they don't know you history so the assumption is that you receive what you just have every week/month. (in short it shouldn't be there its kind of an emergency tax) First question will you be due another lot of pay before the end of march? if so you can fill out a P46 and it will get corrected on your next payslip, if not you will need to claim it from the inland revenue. |

Your employer should have them, really they should have given you one when you started if you didn't have a P45. Speak to payroll/HR or your boss (whoever you can) and just say you are one week 1 tax so need to get a P46 filled in, do it as soon as possible as they will need to do what they are doing on there payroll system to correct it. If for any reason it doesn't work out you will be able to get it back so don't stress, but as you would imagine it will be easier if it gets sorted now. |
