Right...

Due to certain circumstances I may be able to have my old car back in my hands... MK1 Fiat Uno 45s !!
Less rust than most Fords I have seen, even newer ones :lol:

Around the same time of this happening the following things happen:

Mondeo needs tax (higher tax band, so alot of cash.. around £100 for 6 months)
Uno needs MOT (nothing to fail on, costs me £35)
Insurance needs renewing (Uno is cheaper than the Mondeo by about £250-£300 for the year)

I drive up to 1600 miles per month right now, and have to park on a street in Newcastle at the weekends, meaning a few things:
1: Its a tight squeeze to get a space for the Mondeo compared to small cars
2: The chances of getting abused and broken into are high

Now, the Mondeo is a fantastic drive for my many miles and its good, Ive been getting close to 500 miles per tank (near on £70 a tank, its 60ltr tank) so its doing around 40mpg

The lower costs of the Uno (tax, insurance, and most likely fuel!) and the ability to park it in smaller spaces (which is a big big advantage).. along with people not even looking at it twice on a theft reason as its 22 years old lol

I am tempted to use it as my daily hack and shove the Mondeo into my large garage...

Now to keep the fun factor I have been looking into giving the Uno some more power, for reliability, fun and MPG.

The current 1ltr 8v carb'd engine is great but isnt that reliable due to choke and has naff all power, which means MPG is affected.

A MK1 Fiat Punto 1.2 16v sporting engine, with 86bhp fits straight in with the adition of some wiring... which therefore gives it what it needs.

But then again I am unsure if I could live with an old car for so many miles per month, on a confortable factor... hmmm

What you guys think???

And onto the facts:

Uno 45s fitted with 1.2 16v...
Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 86
Weight without Driver (KG) : 710
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 123.07

vs:

MK3 Fiesta Si fitted with 2.0ltr Zetec engine...
Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 128
Weight without Driver (KG) : 970
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 134.08

Turbo engines cost too much and would require alot of handling mod's as its f'n dangerous standard :lol:

1.2 16v which can keep up (well close to..) with a 2.0ltr Fiesta is highly amusing IMO

not many know this as i have blue blood but iv got a corsa b :doh: (currently lent my sis while she does her learnin n shiz)
i use it to go to centre parcs around the country its a 1.2 8v in bogey green faded bumpers lol its a mess but the seats arent bad and the mpg is immense elvdon forest and back on 30 quid from sheffield area!
a small car would be perfect for your run up north
you'll learn to like it lol

other than that i got to and from FF with ease, but thats no where near 1600 miles :lol:

My weeks normally consist of.. (unless I dont bother going to newcastle one weekend, like this weekend)

Monday, drive from Newcastle to work 130 miles, then 15 miles to mums house
tuesday-thursday 30 miles daily
Friday, 15 to work, then 130 to newcastle

So its like 400 odd whatever miles a week before doing any other mileage for other than work
But its only the Newcastle journeys down the A1 which are slightly long.. but not too bad, Ive done it in that shitty Fiesta MK5 I had and the Punto :lol:

Terry you have a good point.. yours is bare :lol:

TBH I dont think it would be a bad move, as the savings will be good for me, and fitting a 1.2 would give it some fun instead of being as boring, lower it a tad and put some bigger brakes on the front and keep the rest standard!

BTW the Mondeo has just hit 111,500 miles and doing like 1500 or so a month isnt good for it :lol:
Uno only has 60k on it ! And less rust :lol:

Mondeo would stay in the garage until I wanted it back on the road..

Problem is, finding a 1.2 16v is getting abit thin on the ground

Can find MK2 1.2 16vs but they go for a few hundred and I need the wiring and ecu out of a mk1

We shall see.... I may just do this over time in my garage and bring it out next year maybe :lol:

But an xr always attracts knobs to break in lol

the uno was done over earlier in the year and bent the door. Of which you can't find any spares!

Was thinking earlier... if I do happen to get it.. I may just keep it standard engine wise as its not long had new water pump.. belt.. alternator.. and various ignition related bits.. only done 60k and just needs a service to run better!

drop it 60mm .. either leave the bent door or paint it.. and enjoy a manual choke 45bhp beast!


ANd then soon as I get bored fit a better engine lol photo sporting engines and looms seem to be a pain to find compared to the 8v 60bhp engine

Passenger door slightly damaged, but easy fix TBH

Blacken up the bumpers with a heat gun ;)

60mm springs

Sort the speedo cable problem, sort the exhaust downpipe (cannot get them anymore, have to mod a punto one!), service it and have a cheap run around that just about does 85mph? :lol:
