first:
ask them how much theyd pay for somatl ike that.
second:
ask if they lost nethin recently
lastly:
sell it back to them for a shade under what they paid for it
or just ask for money off

i've left a screwdriver in the gear linkage, shut the bonnet on my digital camera, left a can of wd40 on the battery, left spanners on bolts, left loose nuts/bolts in various places, dropped hose clips somewhere behind the manifold.. etc etc i always forget things. |

never left tools under the bonnet, have left the spare wheel carrier half undone a few times resulting in the spare flying down the road and a shower of sparks when ive gone over a bump!
nobody is yet to have been behind me when its happened (thank god) 
i also left my pioneer face off on top of the car when i drove off in the dark, was chatting bubbles to my ex and didnt realise until the next day, ooops, that cost!

i do work in a garage, and i do make these mistakes but we've got bulletproof quality controllers who return my tools everytime! own car: .lets see, have had breather filter fall off pipe and get jammed in gear linkages (that shit me up) .left calliper mounting bolts loose and rattled a bit .left ratchets and spanners all over cars before.. specially on scuttle panel by the wipers
.shorted out a espace starter motor when my 1/2 inch ratchet fell off the rocker cover and onto the two terminals.. phwar.. nothing damaged but kinda scary - everyone knows its mine now though kinda like personalisation..
.some how managed to loose a lever bar on zooms car while doing the front end repair! literally nowhere to be found!! lastly
working on my rover i left a 3/8" ratchet on the cambelt (covers off doing headwork just reassembling).. turned the engine over to try out my cambelt timing.. went flying.. you should of seen it 
im getting better these last few months anyway starting to be more logical and orderly in the way i work, storing tools off the vehicle after each operation and storing car parts in a logical fashion
