ok, I'm thick, I've come to terms with that, an I'm sure some of you have to. With the stupid questions I ask but here goes. I read somewhere, might have been on here peak power for a 1.6 is 90bhp @ 5000rpm What does that mean? Does that mean if I changed gear at 5000rpm I get 90bhp? And anywhere before or after is less? Because I always thought the more you rev it the faster, so I go to 6500rpm and change gear when ok trying to beat people in races from traffic lights that are privately set up in my own field ![]() ![]() I thought about it and thought of "power curves" and "torque curves" I've never seen what the graphs say just the lines. And seen that they drop at the top. Which to me Might say that the peak power is 90bhp@5000rpm and then as it goes over that the bhp goes down.. (I haven't seen this for a fiesta it was on top gear breifly if you remember the powerpoint) But yeah, overall question is, what's faster 5000rpm gear changes or 6500rpm gear changes. Try not to flame me for stupidity I'd like to think your all used to me by now ![]() |

possibly not the best thing to rev it to the 6500 red line through the gears, if the standard 1600 peaks at 5000rpm would think power has well dropped of by 6500. best using the torque and peak power through the gears, only reving past peak power enough to ensure it stays around that peak point when changing up to the next gear, some times worth running to the red line if doing something like 0-60 times when holding in a gear may be better than changing up for the last 50 yards or other reason when in 5th and run out of gears. i generally run mine to 6k through gears, even though it peaks at 6200rpm ![]() |

90bhp is what you have and 5000rpm is where its at so below then is less and above is less if racing i would just take it past the 5000rmp depends if it drops loads or goes off slightly but in higher gears 4/5 you will be able to tell the power drop off more than in first and second. mine car was set up for power upto 6000 witch is not enough for me i dont think so going to get it set up for power though to 7000 get a bit longer in each gear as soon as i get past 6000 the power dies and also the torque does so no need for me to take it any more as i would be losing time. |

Awesome. I always went by the standard of more Revs the faster you went, but clearly not then? I thought if you went over redline you get sort of "engine lagg" in my words which Is why the redline was there. But maybe as the peak power is at 5000rpm, going up to higher revs say 6500rpm, when you change gear it goes Down to like 4000-4500 whatever, then it'll be back at 5000 quicker than it would than of you changed at 5000 and it dropped to 3000. Kinds confusing myself But if you understand stick with it. |

yeah thats ok in 1/2 but i would think be better to change earlier in 3/4because the touqe will drop off with the power so 3/4 change earlier so you can get the touqe aswell |

yeah, my explanation should have been more "blow up your engine and will lose More power than you gain" that's what i was trying to say |

I won't mention where myy engine tops out. As mentioned said the torque is also important plus reving past 5000 will mean you are already higher up on the next gear. I just change gear instinctively really, never really thought about where I should, just knowing when from how it feels. |

i change at around 7000rpm, even though my car makes max 167bhp at 6500, just so I land in the max power range again as my max torque is around 5500, so as soon as i'm past 2nd gear im constantly in the power range thanks to the close ratio box. A quickshift will help slightly with the speed of your gearchange. |
