I have bought a 1.4 and currently am modifying it and love it! The opportunity has arisen to buy a 1.6 in much better condition than my 1.4 but needs the mods that I've already done to the 1.4. I feel disloyal to the 1.4 if I just strip off the best bits for the new 1.6 and sell on the 1.4. I know it sounds stupid but these little cars have souls. Any advice would be extremely helpful as I am new to the Si world.

what bits you done on the 1.4 that you wanted to carry over ?

both have there plus points and both have thier different routes of modifying

1.6 > 2.0 zetec engine
1.6 > 1.8 zetec engine
1.4 > 1.6 cvh turbo engine
1.4 > 1.6 8v Xr2i engine

if the 1.6 is in better condition body work wise than your 1.4 then its totally up too you, to get the body work/work done to your 1.4 will work out more expensive than buying the 1.6

i not sure if you'd be able to swap any bits off your 1.4 onto the 1.6 tho, so you might have to start from scratch in the respect if you go for the 1.6

In theory the 1.6 model is better mate as it is more powerful and has the better interior, among other subtle differences. If your changing the engine in the future, however, it doesn't really matter which model you use as you can do an equally powerful conversion with each of the models as terry (onslack) has outlined above.

If I were you mate, I would keep the one with the most solid shell/least rust, as this is the most important factor in the future, but at the end of the day its up to you.

Also remember the 1.6 will be more expensive to insure
