Everytime I look at cars that are older, slower and generally 'worse' than my current car, I shut down on the idea pretty quickly. Ry knows I wanna do something a little more 'looks' focused but that means a major step down in performance and probably reliability too. How have you coped with the step down? I used to use the 106 GTi and the Clio at the same time and other than the loss of torque there wasn't much in it, so it was hardly a drop. Other than the 106 just feeling older which I can deal with, sort of. ![]() ![]() |

If you are keeping your Clio then I wouldn't worry about it! It isn't as bad as you think. I regularly drive Sam's car if I can, and going from the Pulsar to a 1.4 Escort is one hell of a difference, but the Escort is so much easier and less hard work than the Pulsar for the work commute. Plus, when I do get back into the Pulsar afterwards, it feels soooooo different and puts a smile on my face! ![]() I do enjoy driving the Escort though, as it's also anonymous! Blends right in with all the other cars, whereas the Pulsar makes you stick out like a sore thumb. So it's totally different. If you're getting a slower car as your only car though, I can offer no advice, as I'm not in that position ![]() |

Like Des, I don't think I could cope if it were my only car, but I drive around in a cavalier diesel day-to-day with a mighty 82 sick horses kickin' away. Even when I don't have a "proper" car on the road I seem fine with it. Whether it be because of the anticipation of driving something better, or the fact that I'll get over 60mpg, as aposed to the 30 i'd be getting otherwise, or maybe its the fact that it's so sh!t to drive......it's actually fun as a result (FWD y0) |

nice little '5 that is! i've thought about doing the same except my step down would obviously be different to yours. i don't think i could do it, options i've contemplated have always ended up the modified root. i.e. 1.3 Ka/Fiesta and camming it. Why? i don't know i just have to ![]() ![]() seriously though, the drop down would be far less if you had something which could still go abit. maybe TD something or other? |

I'd go for some kind of slightly retro model if I was in your shoes, for example a Roland Garros model in the Pug range, etc. I don't know what this was, for the Renaults, VW's etc. You just need a bucket full of character, and the '5 will totally give you that. or an S1 Rallye to fit both the performance and character areas ![]() |

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, ive gone from a xr2i to a 1.25 fiesta zetec. more modern and handles far better, has more mod cons, doesnt rust, reliable, safer etc etc but its slow. really slow. and boring. my fuel economy is on pare with my xr2i, why? because i have to thrash it to 6000rpm to get anywhere near my usual pace. still i know which i'd rather drive on those winter roads. mind you i wouldnt say the xr2i was great to begin with. but it is fun. which is the main thing. |
