Hi

The clutch cable has just snaped on my Si 16v. I've heard its common for our car. So can anyone give me a guide how to change it and what i'd need.

Any help would be appriciated.

Thanks, James.

Right, i've got the cable and just had a quick look before it got dark.

The gearbox side looks fairly simple. Just got to remove the air box and maybe battery tray.

I can just about see where it goes into the bulkhead. The thing is how do you get access  ? I presume you raise the car up and car get at it from underneath.

Is this what you lot did?

Thanks, James.

You don't really need serious access to the bulk head, you detach it from the pedal inside the car and it should just pull out of the bulk head. The cable sheath ends in the lump of plastic you can see and only the core goes into the car.

Can't you just put your arm down the back of the engine? I'm not particularly au fait with Mk3 engine bays.

My Dad did it from below when he did it. I did it from above. It's a bit fiddley, but keep at it and you'll win in the end. :) I put the gearbox side in first and then pulled it tight in the footwell end.

Forgot about that airbox business with not having one there, haha.

Ollie, are you confused with Mk3s cuz the bonnet lifts the correct way? :P

If by the "correct" way you mean so that if it come's unlatched while you're driving along it'll flip up and smash into the windscreen as opposed to just staying closed.... then yes. :P

yay :)

I did it.

It wasn't really that hard to do, and i found my hand does fit down the back of the engine bay  . I just had to remove the airbox and that was it. The fiddley part was attaching the new cable back inside the car to the pedal.

It works fine now, but the bitting point is WAY too high :frown: , and i can't drive with it like that.

How do i tighten the cable/drop the pedal?

Thanks, James.

8-) sly ol dog

mouse!..

can u stop the ratchet adjuster from clicking on pedal release? - is this a stretched cable or somethin? - would it have any relation to the clutch feeling worn? (might be time for me to renew clutch - yay another fun weekend up at the barn!!)

Damn you auto adjuster :(

I went for a little cruise, to test out the clutch bite. I suppose i could get used to it, my mum's polo has also got a high bite that i didn't like. I just have to sit a bit further back  .

It may accually prove better for the race starts :) , because it encourages me to rev higher before the clutch can be dumped.

Thanks for your help everyone.

James.

if it keeps clicking every 10 mins or so on town driving, then its the rachet bit on the pedal if not clutch  :)the cable does stretch but not a lot

James, lift the pedal upwards towards you as far as you can and then push it down to the floor and release it a few times, you should hear it click at least once.

See if that makes a difference.

If not try putting a couple of thickish 12mm washers between the end of the cable and the gearbox housing to space it off a bit - this moves the ratchet onto a less worn set of teeth.

HTH :)

sorry to sound stupid this evening:
if one changes his clutch does he have to adjust his ratchet pedal position?? (im guessing you pull the pedal all the way up and let it rest then pump it a few times?)

- im starting to prefer hydraulics now!
