erm .. although this is never going to be a perfect match EVER but performance and reliability are the main factors preferably smaller rather than family size it HAS to be a ford and budget is like £2500-3000. chris+dave mk5 zs's are on the short list but i am so fussy that it may take a while to find a good one. i like pumas but i wouldnt have one. mk6 zs's are pony lol (no offence to any owners of them that read this) i have looked at many things. as mentioned to lou i have been considering the focus st170 for the fact they are pretty nippy, reliable and i like the look but it has to be grey or silver. mk5 zs's are on the short list as previously mentioned. there is a mk2 fiesta on pistonheads with a cvh on twin 40's i quite fancied lol looked at a few escorts but there is very few i am drawn to looked at a few mk4 shape orions. i just have no idea and am tooooo fussy oh and ry.. it has to be a ford because of a non-ford work car

Mk6 ZS TDCi but I doubt you would find one for that money, then again I haven't looked in a while. Fi still wants one. But she also likes the newer shape Focus, they're really good VFM.

Further on from that I would look at a late Puma/Mk5 ZS or an ST170 as you said. A bit limited with something that will tend to be reliable after that.

Reliability and Performance won't come from an older Ford, especially anything that has been fettled with, but then you know enough people who know their Ford's inside out so fixing won't be a major issue I imagine

Well as said im enjoying my st170, perfect gor the everyday and fun on the side.
Dont forget about the mondeo st's although alot bigger than what you wanted.

zs will be more chuckable but st170 will be win with 6 speed box and more power

The price of them atm is rediculous, literally shot down over christmaa.

Get yourself an ST170 Sam.
I have one and it's great, a good all rounder. It deals with the regular stuff in comfort but when you want to give it some beans it has the poke too. Plenty of them out there at good prices so be choosey. They do have a couple of known issues, IMRC, Corroded sump, leaking thermostat housing etc but are all easy enough to sort out. Do it!
