Hope you can help, just found your site and glad i did!

I've owned a 1.6Si since new but have been overseas for a few years and left the car with my Mum to runabout in ... needless to say, since coming back i've noticed that my old Si (just turning 15 infact) has picked up more than a few scratches, bumps and has had a few patchy touch-ups and is getting rust bubbles in the usual places.

It's breaking my heart to see my first and only car in this state :(

What I was wondering is whether you guys could recommend:

1. A good place that would be able to respray and restore the Tourmallard Green beauty to as close to new and deal with the rust;
2. Where I could find an original set of 5 spoke alloys - mine had the covers;
3. Whether the original door mirrors are available in a body colour? (would I need to get from Ford?)
4. Finally, what is your suggestion to get the engine bay cleaned up? After 9 years of not so good treatment it is looking filthy!

Considering i drove 110,000 miles in 5 years and its done 30,000 in 9 since I last had it, it still drives well but I'd like to put her back in a decent condition and get her looked after properly again.

Given her age, is there anything else I should be mindful of?

I know this is a long message but i figured if you guys have a site for the Si, then you must be the best people to speak to!

Hope to hear from you.

Andrew

answers
1. any decent bodyshop should be able to do the rust and paint issues for you
have a look at previous work and make sure you are happy with the standard

2. alloys can be found on all the big auction sites for peanuts
even check the for sale section

3. unsure if they did them colour coded possibly fiesta rs turbo mirrors?
or have them sprayed to match

4. a good tin of elbow grease should sort out your engine bay :D

hope thats of use
pics of this si please :D

Get the mirrors painted when you get any body work done, should you find a decent place.

Where are you based? Someone might be local and know of somewhere you can try. Failing that, get the yellow pages (or yell.com), and have a look around. As said by Darren, take a look at their work first. Don't expect it to be cheap though, you get what you pay for, and it may well excedd the value of the car now.

As for cleaning up the engine bay, get some engine cleaner and give it a good blast. Make sure you protect the electric plugs which are exposed (cling film will do), and clean it all up. Takes time to do it properly, but will look good. Then follow it up with some dressing, otherwise the clean look will soon fade and look dull.

EvilDes - She's up in South Cheshire/North Staffs.

I'm in Birmingham.

I guess it would make sense for someone to give it agood inspection for rust all through before I do anything - i'm no mechanic - would that be a big job or as simple as getting itn to a trusty garage and looking underneath?

Ahh whereabouts are you? I'm in Great Barr right by J7 M6 :)

It's hard to find a trusty garage nowadays! I never trust them! But it's not hard to find bad rust patches. There's a few points on the Fiesta which are common. Obviously, the arches, easy to spot. Also, in the boot where the floor meets the rear of the car, the top of the struts in the boot can be missed too, open the doors and check under the rubbers at the bottom, the sills, and then the whole of the underneath. Have a gander at the front and rear valances too (the metal under the bumpers). And the sunroof can be a bit of a water trap, causing rust.

Just a case of getting underneath and having a look, if anything looks a bit suspect, poke it with a screwdriver to see if it's eaten through. If so, it'll mean cutting out and welding up, which is where it starts getting expensive if you're not handy with a welder.

welcome to fsi, hope you enjoy your stay

i'm going to repeat what has been said as theres some good advice above already

only thing i will say is dont be affraid to get stuck in and have a go yourself, its taken me years to work up the confidence to start doing bits on my cars, but when you own old fords(cars in general) you have to get stuck in :red:

Welcome to fsi!!
you have definately come to the right place, and the best forum!

You need to get some pics up to see how bad the rust is to see whether its worth havin a bash yourself. It also depends what money your willing to throw at it because if its no object then body shop it but if you need to keep costs down then do it yourself. Imo though you should try it yourself because if you do mess it up then you can always go bodyshop afterwards lol. Also maybe get it detailed and it may give your paint work life again which will save on respraying.

Welcome to the site :)

I have to agree with everything above. With regard to body shop I'd say it's definately gonna cost more than the car is worth so it depends on how badly you want it sprayed. When I looked it was around £140 for a bonnet alone and to get the whole car will be >£1500.

Ask dave g fsi about cleaning out an engine bay, his rs turbo is immaculate under the bonnet.

When i had my si it had rust in one of the front wings, not cheap, i had someone weld me on a new one, but the spray and blend was about £170, quite expensive but if its not the issue its good to look around at people's work as a good job for £££ is better than a bad job which wont last the course :)

Welcoe to Fsi by the way
