Just ordered myself a K&N 57i kit, and was looking at the destructions on the inter-web-net, and was wondering what the fudge the "resonator boxes" on the air cleaner assembly actually do.

Im assuming they are present on the air cleaner system on the Si aswell as the Mk 4 Zetec. The only thing I can see is that the one at the front in the grill channels air to the air box, then there are 2 more protrusions which just go the bottom of the engine bay and stop.

Just wondering what they did, cus Im supposed to take em off, but the top bit would make an ideal air intake as well as using the pipe bit that comes with the kit.

Any ideas?! :)

the theory behind the resonator pipe is that it distrubs the air entering the inlet tract allowing it to mix more evenly with the fuel when it passes the injectors.

in practise all it does is slow down the air flow and creates a restriction in the intake system.
