Got a good bit of work done on the car today. Fitted the MK5 Polybushed rear axle, bit of a ballache but doesn't half handle well now. With it, I've replaced the shoes, handbrake cables and bearings. Also, changed my ignition barrel aswell to a brand new one. According to the parts man at Ford, I've had the last brand new MK3 ignition barrel in the country, the barrel had been made before my key though, he told me someone came in for a barrel, had it made up then never had it, so I've been given a new pair of keys. Bit unfortunate now I have to use two different keys to start and unlock the car, but not the end of the world. I made an unfortunate discovery though when I was putting the new beam on....

Only picture I got of doing beam was this

Then I found this, on both sides of the inner arch. Hopefully I'll be able to plate it up rather than replace the legs, the legs are solid, just seems to be the inner arches themselves.

So, little update, I've sorted out the inner arch rust now that I showed in the last post. The dreaded tin worm had totally buggered both N/s and O/s rear inner arches but they're totally solid now and all undersealed inside the arches to make sure it doesn't come back!

Quick picture of how they look now

Image

Wouldn't even know they'd been done

Also, with the MK5 rear beam on now, I decided to get some FRP style rear axle spacers. Went a bit mad though and bought the 20.5mm ones, brilliant choice however because now the car handles like it's on rails. The few subtle changes I've made recently have added up to make a big difference when cornering fast. Spacers were easy enough to fit, and the wheels don't look so lost in the arches now like they used to.

Looks pretty good from the back too

I've recently been in two minds about selling it however I'm getting through quite a few of the cars gripes now at long last. I've sorted the stupid ignition barrel out which was broken when I bought the car, refitted the boot latch so I can open the boot from inside (still need to suss out why the popper stopped working though) and also sorted the handbrake out. When I replaced the beam, I put new handbrake cables on it, handbrake was fine for a couple of days then all of a sudden up a hill, the self adjuster inside the drum shat itself and left me with no handbrake up a near vertical hill....Finally about 3 weeks later I've gotten round to sorting it, so lets hope it doesn't cock up again....I've also bought some FRST Recaro's. Drivers one is fitted but passenger isn't yet. Car needs a bit more welding to the O/S/R inner sill to sort the water ingress, and I need to sort the windscreen seal where it's leaking up front, at least I think it's windscreen.

Glad to see you got that inner arch sorted mate! Don't sell it! You will regret it from day one, if your get bored, cover it up in the corner and put it away for a few month, it won't take long before your itching to drive it again !!

Yeah, was thinking about getting a decent shell and dropping the good bits from this one in that but I'm too in love with this one haha, once the little niggles are sorted I'll be over the moon with it. Just the water ingress and cambelt to sort now unless something else goes bang!

Today I've ordered myself an Omex rev limiter and shift light so all being well, I'll be able to get that wired up at weekend. Next thing I want is a set of bonnet raisers, anyone recommend what ones to use if they have them? Do MK5's use the same type of raisers? Also will be looking to get a exhaust system in the near future to let the engine breathe a bit better!

Once I've got a daily sorted, I think I'll have to go down the turbo route, loads of lag and torque steer lol

I love a bit of lag though haha, what manifolds did you run? standard inlet? I've seen some Zetec Turbos run 1800 inlet and FRST exhaust manifold and turbo? I'd only really be after a low boost set up, around 220hp something like that. Bet yours had a lot more potential if you wound the boost up!

yeah it would have been around 240bhp on 1 bar boost apparently

Had standard Inlet with larger throttle body. SVM Exhaust manifold and a T25 turbo

What injectors did you run? My mate has just picked up a blacktop turbo engine but with no inlet manifold. I said use standard inlet and run some uprated injectors on it, any ideas? I really want to turbo mine now, not sure if to go low boost with decompression plate :/

Bit more work done on the car past couple of days. I've sourced myself a CVH 4-2-1 manifold with Zetec flange to fit the 2.0. Also got myself an Omex clubman rev limiter with launch control for a bit of fun. It's a good bit of kit really, now I know how to use it, it really does pop and bang lovely. Can't wait to get the 4-2-1 on now aswell which I'll be picking up tomorrow! I have at the moment bodged the omex unit in, however this weekend I'm going to route the switch and wiring up behind the dash and into the steering column cowling so it is easily reachable with my right hand. Ideally, I would like it on the steering wheel, but need to work out a way to wire it in without it getting tangled after turning the steering wheel...
