if you buy your rims before you drop the car then you know how much it can be lowered without too much rubbing. thats what i'm gonna do anyways.

if u scrub it enough over time the arches trim them selves!!! mine did!! and im only of 15's with 45's any after market setup will scrub on full lock without spacers/arch work etc!

btw mine dont scrub anymore, just tidied up where the wheels wore the arch liners

Check the sills, arches, tailgate edges and door edges for rust.
My sills are rotten and i have a bit of rust sprouting on the front edges of the doors.

Make sure it has E/W, C/L and a boot popper.
When i first saw my fez i was shocked because i thought all SI's had the electrics pack as standard, apparently it is easy to fit the electrics pack though - I dont dare to try however.

Then the usual bits, engines, leaks, rattles etc.

I found that my exhaust backbox was tapping against the rear bumper and is over to one side in its little gap in the bumper, dont know why? :? and the heatshield had snapped off as a result of this.

On mine both side sills rusted (being sorted), rear arches bubbling, bottom of bootlid rusted (being sorted), had massive rust behind the carpet in the boot by the rear arch (sorted), and have had to change the water rail because of a hole the size of a pin end.

Apart from all that it is still mechanically sound, no problems at all with starting in the cold or in the hot.

Post subject:  Dreaded tin worm

I have had 3 si's now all have had their good and bad areas with the bodywork. i have found the main areas to look out for are the same as any other mk3/3.5 fiesta

REAR STRUT TOWERS - feel all the way round push back seats forward to do so so and get right in there.

UNDER SILLS - along the entire length.

TOP OF SILLS - where door seal runs towards pillar.

REAR INNER AND OUTER ARCHES - normally from rust from inside out so have have a pin handy if any big blisters, if the they pop and water comes out you know back arches are full of filler (which is like a sponge) and new inner and outer arches will need to be fitted. normal bubbling is ok take a magnet also!

PETROL CAP - as above. however bit better on mk3.5 take a magnet it should stick all way round if not bodged with filler don't let a good looking one mislead you as it will go tatty very quickly.


FRONT AND REAR VALANCES RUST THROUGH - have a poke round inside boot as well where rear bumper studs come through sometimes go around there.

on the mechanical sides of things the zetec engines are bullet proof usually if it's the 1.6 you go for. occasionally sticky valves and poor idle but these can be cheaply and easily be rectified.

lower front arms are the only other weak spot i have encountered normally on lowered cars only they tend to wander around a bit on the road you couldn't miss it again not too expensive.

Hope this hasn't put you off as the Si really is worth every penny and allthough they aren't a quick car as such they are very enjoyable to own and drive which is why im on my third!

The main thing when looking for one is not to be too careful and don't be afraid to walk away if your not sure never rush in and buy the first you see!

i have only had my si for a few days, but after owning alot of fezzys, id say the si is the best one to go for, even thou the 1.6 is only 90bhp, its suprisingly not that slow!(i have plans to cam mine!) id go for it :)

Miss_si - 2.0 option maybe easier, probably cheaper too. How ever its your choice!

i have to agree, with cookie, you see a much better power gain by dropping a 2.0 :devil: , as i reckon it will work out cheaper than caming your 1.6

but as cookie said its your car, your money and your decision 8-)

you'll love it, its doesn't push your insurance up too much either 8-)
